Free, Edible and Highly Nutritious Salads and Medicines are all around you when you walk through the wilds*. Here are some brief tips on how to recognize the precious from the poisonous, the delicious from the disgusting.

"Man cannot improve upon, but instead defiles, Mother Nature."

Did you know that most wild plants found growing virtually everywhere are far better food for humans than any that we can buy at a grocery store? Not only can walking through the "wilds*" provide essential fresh air and exercise, it can also provide an abundance of free, nutritious foods that have not been compromised by the hands of man.

If you are knowledgeable about which foods are edible, and which are not; what seasons they are best eaten in, and which are most nutritious, your wild walks can advance your health up to the "Ultimate" classification. You will likely not need to take any supplements, potions or cures. You will have all the protein you need. Your body will be rich with calcium and other alkaline reserves. You will have an abundance of nearly every beneficial mineral that exists. Your energy will be seemingly endless, however you will easily rest in deep, peaceful sleep and awaken alert, enthusiastic and energetic. Your mind will operate clearly, effectively and efficiently. Your immune system will be uncompromising.

On the other hand, if you are not knowledgeable, eating wild foods poses a high likelihood of making you extremely ill, or of killing you. This is most definitely an area where ignorance is NOT bliss! That said, here is a common sense ...

... WARNING! ...

Eat ONLY the plants that you can POSITIVELY identify, and that you know to be safe to eat!

Cornell University lists 98 poisonous plants worldwide. The book Toxic Plants of North America by George E. Burrows and Ronald J Tyri lists 75 families of known toxic plants. Given that there are at least 1,200 plants in North America, the odds may be in our favor, but since the stakes are so high, eating unknown plants is like playing Russian Roulette with a loaded gun.

Okay, now that you are sufficiently warned, let's get to the good part. The benefits of eating known edible wild foods.

*The "wilds" include vacant lots and unattended spots of ground in major metropolitan cities---wherever vegetation grows without interference from man. Nature provides foods freely whenever possible.
